Be Visible

Teachers want a principal who knows what is going on—who spends time where the action is. If you spend all your time in the office, you will not know what is happening in the school. The staff will assume that you are not interested in what they are doing.

Instead, drop in on classes. Do not interrupt, just pop in and out. Students and teachers will become accustomed to your presence. One elementary principal said, “I told each class at the beginning of the year that I would be stopping by. Knowing how easily young children are distracted, I told the children and teacher that they should continue with whatever they were doing.” After a brief visit, make a point of visiting with the teacher or drop a note in the teacher’s mailbox commenting on some positive learning activities that you observed. Any constructive criticism should be accompanied by positive observations delivered in a personal conversation.
